How To Start A Movement, Talk, Overlook West
Some of the wildest passion projects can become viral sensations that resonate with more audiences than imaginable. Digital strategist and screenwriter William Yu created the #StarringJohnCho campaign in 2016 to show what it would look like if today's Hollywood blockbusters cast an Asian American actor. Two years after Yu launched his social movement, actor John Cho became a leading man in the 2018 movie "Searching." Yu talks about what it takes to launch his initiative and how you can use research to advance the cause of increasing representation of people of color in the media.

  • William Yu, creator of #StarringJohnCho@its_willyu
Yu's Shorty Award-winning #StarringJohnCho campaign used Photoshop to insert actor John Cho into hit Hollywood films in order to spark a global conversation about Asian American representation in media. As a former Senior Strategist at Giant Spoon, Adweek’s 2018 Breakthrough Advertising Agency of the Year, Yu helped clients like Paramount, Netflix, and Absolut build meaningful connections with their audiences and create ideas that make impactful dents on culture.

  • Mariecar Mendoza, Senior Digital Arts and Entertainment Editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, @SFMarMendoza where she oversees daily arts and entertainment coverage for Datebook and datebook.sfchronicle.com. Prior to The Chronicle, Mariecar was a features digital editor for the Los Angeles News Group where she specialized in music, food and festival coverage for the region. She has also worked as a multimedia news reporter for several publications throughout California.
